o.k., here are the x-rays I have been working at getting. Feel free to guess. It may take me a little bit to find out the ratings they received (if any, some of these are diagnostics for other things and are just being used to show poor positioning).

These are obviously diagnostic (these were for spine) but a great show of what poor positioning can do to good hips.

These were some actual hip x-rays:
We'll call this Dog 1

Update.....I still haven't gotten the OFA Certificate from OFA in the mail, but Cayman is now on the OFA site. His hips are OFA Fair. Nothing on the elbows yet, but I know they will go OFA Normal.

So, those of you that said Fair, you were right!!

It may be that OFA has raised the bar for the breed since they have so many GSD xrays in their data base giving them more to use for comparison. The criterium is different for every breed, a St with an OFA excellent may not even get a number if it were a GSD. Today's OFA fair GSD might have been yesterday's OFA good.

The OFA consensus is based on a comparison of other dogs of the same age and breed. Not a bad thing to raise that bar I guess, but then again so many vets are taking substandard hip films that some normal dogs could fail to attain a certifcation due to poor positioning and/or exposure. It looks like it will be even more important to carefully choose the vet you use for hip xrays. Only a moron could mess up an elbow xray LOL.

I think it's a good thing that's happening with OFA if this is indeed what is going on! There are some pretty questionable Fair OFA"s out there that maybe should have gone Mild HD. We may not see as many Excellents now either.

I think you are right, Betty. OFA stats do seem to support OFA's conclusion that the breeds with the most dogs rated excellent tend to produce less HD. Considering the number of GSD xrays submitted to date, I think the percentage of excellents is a lot lower than most other breeds. That too could be another reason to raise the standard. Then again, maybe the readers had migraines when they rated these dogs fair. Who knows that another xray wouldn't receive a good. Been there, done that.

Another update. I got Cayman's elbow resulsts. He has Grade 1 Elbow Dysplasia in both elbows. The Radiographic Findings came back as Degenerative Joint Disease. NOT what I was hoping for....BUT, he's not showing any clinical signs, more importantly...HE IS HEALTHY.

DJD is the fancy term for arthritis. Grade 1 is the least severe. So, shouldn't be a problem. Could be just a "touch", but if it's in both elbows, a sign that there is probably something that could be better in the structure, causing some friction.

IMO she looks normal for her breed and age. The positioning could be a lot better, but I don't see anything I'd be concerend about if she were my dog.
